Bringing the wind Band Sound to the commercial world.

The Concert to Soundtrack Series is a collection of concert band and wind ensemble music created for the intended use of both concert performance and cinematic use. Its mission is to bring the wind band sound into the commercial world. It is the beginning of a new hybrid of concert and cinematic wind band music that is accessible to everyone for purchase, performance, and creative use!

Origins

During one of my private composition lessons, My private instructor and I spoke about my current work-in-progress and the end-goal for my music. And I didn't realize it until then, but a lot of my concert band works sound like they could be used for cinematic use. That's when it hit me.

There has not been a lot of wind ensemble music created specifically for commercial use.

Any wind band pieces for films/soundtracks have been rearranged from orchestral originals. And due to the highly monetization-influence of most corporate policies, any sheet music or score of a soundtrack that musicians would like to learn and play need to be privately purchased at an expensive rate, and then licensed at an even more expensive price to publicly perform or record.

In the music education field, a concert band piece could go up to $50+ but be allowed to perform publicly without issuing a license, unless it’s a copyrighted soundtrack of a commercial/film. So why can’t we have both the accessibility of commercial/cinematic sheet music for wind band and the opportunity to perform publicly and use as a soundtrack in our own little projects?

My composition teacher and I spoke about this and more in our lesson. Most often in cinematic and commercial films, the sound of the orchestra is preferred because that specific type is more familiar to us. Wind band music is still fairly unrecognizable in that universe, even though lots of people, professional and unprofessional, experienced or unexperienced, know the genre. Most people that said they have heard of the wind ensemble, would probably say they've heard it because they played a band instrument.

Despite that, there is still a disconnect in the relation between the wind band and cinema. The orchestral sound is inherently embedded in film culture and is therefore more useable and widespread. Yes, films have employed many instrumentations to try out, including electronic music, jazz, and rock. It is more commonly found in Europe to use brass bands. But there hasn't been as much cinematic wind ensemble music out there.

This a matter of trend and as composers, we have to abide by the request of the producers that hire us. HOWEVER, if we look deep enough into the literature for wind ensemble, we can find lots of original works that can easily fit into the commercial industry.

The potential is out there! It's up to us to bring that forward!
