Music Theory & Composition
I offer private lessons in music composition, theory, and orchestration and can include tutoring in the music notation softwares Sibelius & Musescore, and any kind of score prep, score editing, arranging, and lyric writing.
As of April 2020, I only offer lessons remotely through Zoom.
Composition lessons are unique and unlike any other private lessons in the sense that the teaching method is much more informal. The goal in private comp. lessons is really to provide students with an independent set of ears for reviewing his/her works. And, based on our listening and analysis of the pieces I then might recommend changes to the notes, form, style or instrumentation. It is important to keep in mind that all discussions regarding the student’s music are merely suggestions and will never attempt to railroad a piece of music. I will also recommend listening and reading to reinforce concepts from our lessons. This could include references such as counterpoint, orchestration, arrangements as well as many other concepts. This is all to provide students with a solid foundation them to continue progressing in their writing.
Prerequisites
While composition lessons are open to all students and lovers of music, there are certain skills & material that should be possessed prior to enrollment.
Required Material: Music Notation Software, preferably Musescore or Sibelius.
The student should be capable of notating music and have a working knowledge of meter, harmony and key-signatures. Lack of knowledge in these areas will not preclude an individual from being accepted for study, however; the instructor may opt for straight music theory lessons before engaging in composition lessons.
