The Climb Over Horizon

Commissioned by the 2023 Holland Brook School Gold Band under the direction of Ms. Jessica Richter

In December of 2022 I had completed my first full-time teaching job as a leave-replacement band director and music teacher at the Readington School District. Among the responsibilities were teaching brass lessons with their 4th to 5th graders at Holland Brook Elementary School. And I was so moved by the support of my fellow co-teachers and the great response to my teaching and fun I had with my students, that I wanted to write something for them as a farewell gift. The elementary band director, Jessica Richter had also been looking for a fun piece to work on for their spring concert, so I happily offered to write one for them as a commission. It’s one of the first time I have written for young band, and I’m happy with the results. This work has all the fun of young band and the musical color of my style of writing. I hope you enjoy.
