This beloved hymnal from 1772 by a former English slave-trader has become synonymous with American values, national crisis, but above all faith and hope. Taken from my large work for orchestra, Portraits of a Nation, which was my reaction in music to the January 6, 2021 insurrection and attack on the U.S. Capitol, this, this revised arrangement attempts to highlight those sentiments, with the well wishes of a people that hopes that this very divided country can once again find a middle ground, find some form of comradery, wash away the prejudice, and fill it with respect and hope. My own hope is that families don’t break apart because of politics, that friends can still find a reason to love each other despite the differences, and that hate in all forms will never find its way back into our hearts.
