Duration: 12 minutes | Grade 5 Concert Band
Filipino Dances is a symphonic rhapsody based on authentic Filipino folk music that dates back to the Spanish-colonial era and the American Occupation. Built upon five different folk and patriotic songs and dances native to the Philippines, the piece is treated closely to its songs’ musical origins and developed extensively with the sounds and colors of the modern concert band. Here dramatic orchestration, tone color, and rhythm envisions the vitality and life of the Filipino into a story of perseverance, fun, passion, and love. It is the composer’s hope that the overall effect of the music will promote and remain true in spirit to the beautiful folk music and culture of the Philippines.
